SURGICAL EYELID CONDITIONS
Dermatochalasis is when one or both eyelids droop down over the eye due to the presence of excess eyelid skin. Droopy eyelids can be caused by age or injury. Surgery for the correction of droopy eyelids can be cosmetic in nature or medically necessary if the excess skin droops down over the eye causing significant visual impairment.
Ptosis is when one or both eyelids droop down over the eye due to eyelid muscle weakness. It can be a congenital condition or one caused by age; or a health condition such as stroke or bells palsey. Ptosis repair can be cosmetic in nature or medically necessary if the eyelids droops down over the eye causing significant visual impairment.
Entropion is the result of the lower eyelid turning inward towards the eye. The eyelashes rub against the eye ball causing irritation and pain. Lack of timely or proper treatment for this condition may result in a corneal ulcer.
Ectropion is the result of the lower eyelid turning outward away from the eye. Without the protection of the lower lid, the eye ball is exposed to dryness and irriation from outside elements. Lack of timely or proper treatment for this condition may result in a corneal ulcer.
Cancerous eyelid lesions present certain health risks to individuals. Cells from malignant lesions can break away and invade surrounding tissue around the eye, as well as spread to other parts of the body. Basal Cell Carcinoma, Squamos Cell Carcinoma, Sebacious Cell Carcinoma and Cutaneous Melanoma are types of cancers that commonly grow on the eyelids. Cancerous lesions must be surgically removed and checked by a pathologist during the surgery ensure that all cancer cells have been removed.
Most eyelid lesions are benign growths that appear on either the upper or lower eyelids, or just inside the eyelid margins. These growths vary in speed of development, symptoms, size and appearance. Eyelid lesions may require removal if they are painful, impair vision, detract from one's appearance, or pose a risk of becoming cancerous. Examples of such lesions include papillomas (skin tags,) chalazia, styes and cysts.
MEDICAL EYE CONDITIONS AND DISEASES
Glaucoma is a disease that damages the optic nerve of the eye. Fluid builds up in the front part of the eye, causing increased pressure in the eye that can damage the optic nerve, often causing blindness if left untreated.
Diabetic retinopathy is an eye disease that affects people with diabetes. High blood sugar levels cause damage to blood vessels in the retina. These blood vessels can swell and leak, or they can close, stopping blood from passing through. Sometimes abnormal new blood vessles grow on the retina. All of the changes can lead to blindness.
Age-related Macular Degenration occurs when the macula part of the retina is damaged. AMD causes loss of central vision. An individual with AMD will retain peripheral vision, but be unable to make out fine details, neither near nor far.
Tear duct disorders can cause excess tearing in adults. Tearing problems may be related to a narrow punctum, or opening of the duct on the eyelid margin. This can be repaired in the office with a minor procedure to enlarge the passageway. Partial or complete nasolacrimal duct obstructions usually require an outpatient surgical procedure.
A chalazion is a swollen bump on the eyelid. It happens when the eyelid’s oil gland clogs up. It may start as a stye. Initially, one might feel little to no pain. As the chalaion grows, the eyelid may get red, swollen, and sometimes tender to touch. If the chalazion gets large, it can press on your eye and cause blurry vision.
Inside our eyes, we have a natural lens. The lens bends (refracts) light rays that come into the eye to help us see. The lens should be clear. If you have a cataract, your lens has become cloudy. It is like looking through a foggy or dusty car windshield. Things look blurry, hazy or less colorful with a cataract.
